Marion Sansom Waterfall
by Nick Galvan
Tucked away on the west side of Marion Sansom Park, my recent hike turned into exactly the reset I didn’t realize I needed. The trails were alive with people enjoying the fresh air. Seeing so many others intentionally spending time in nature was encouraging. At one point, I noticed another woman journaling beside the waterfalls, and without even speaking, we shared a quiet understanding of why we were both there.
The highlight of the hike was undoubtedly the waterfalls. Hearing the steady rush of running water created an instant sense of calm. I found myself slowing down, breathing deeper, and simply taking it all in. There’s something grounding about the water moving over rock and the grounding sense it provided.
Emotionally, the experience was powerful. I can say without hesitation that it was 100% calming. I felt a noticeable reduction in stress, and my mood lifted as the hike went on. My energy felt more balanced, not overstimulated, just steady and clear. Being outdoors always helps me reconnect with myself, and this hike reinforced how impactful even a simple afternoon in nature can be.
I’ve always been someone who seeks out nature. Whether it’s a volcano in Hawaii or a local trail in Fort Worth, I truly believe any amount of nature is better than none. This hike only strengthened that belief. You don’t need dramatic landscapes to feel restored; sometimes a quiet Texas trail is enough.
If I were giving a Park Rx to someone in the community, I’d recommend simple hikes or even walks along the Trinity River. Nature is accessible to nearly every age and activity level. I’d especially suggest bringing a journal. Writing outdoors can deepen reflection and promote mental clarity. For nurses, nature-based prescriptions are a practical, inclusive tool to promote health. Time outside costs nothing, requires no insurance, and is widely available. Encouraging patients and communities to step into the sun, move their bodies, and breathe fresh air is a simple yet powerful way to reduce stress and support overall well-being.
